Welcome to the lore page! Here is where you will find all the information about how vatslimes live and exist.

The original vatslimes were created through a process called somatic embryogenesis, which took place within a vat that was pumped heavily with various nutrients and chemicals to adjust what was needed from an individual. DNA obtained for various vatslimes were derived from varies sources, most being previous employees to the VATCORP facilities. These vatslimes were often referred to as "tankwhelps", and are now considered a rarity among the vatslime species.Through the first stages of growth, a vatslimes would photosynthesize, as their DNA basis was derived from plants. To aid in the growth, authorized personnel would dump various chemicals and minerals to try to aid in growth and development, along with trying to eradicate "undesirable" traits, even if they weren't detrimental to the health or development of the vatslime itself.As growth progressed, so did amount of nutrients pumped into the vats. This caused rapid growth within the vatslimes themselves, and often made them age faster than an average individual. This growth is only ever seen within VATCORP laboratories, and individuals not born in VATCORP facilities developed and aged similarly to the average, everyday citizen.
Once fully grown, the nutrients and minerals pumped into a vat would suddenly be cut off, starting the waking process for a vatslime. It would be very often a vatslime would be a little slow to the start, and would trigger personnel to start pumping in stimulants into the vat, causing either an immediate awakening or immediate death. One way or another, this would result in the damaging of a vat, making it unusable for future vatslimes.The VATCORP laboratories prized uniform subjects and would often put the most uniform and ideal vatslimes into immediate study, training and to even be used as a basis for future DNA collection. Once they were no longer needed, they were just thrown into social areas with other vatslimes, and often were bullied due to a lack of social integration.

Many staff were aware of this, so they would do whatever they could to entertain their sentient creations without trying to get more involved. However, the inevitable would happen, and many vatslimes would try to seek a social bond with the staff of VATCORP's facility. Some were lucky and weren't punished or harmed for trying to communicate or interact, but discipline was more commonly seen. With this being the case, vatslimes learned to just bond with the ones that they had a stronger connection with and eventually to not trust the staff.When vatslimes were not sealed away in stasis or in sealed transportation crates, they were either working with personnel with tasks, being trained in their intended purpose, or just being left to their own devices and allowed to roam in designated areas. A more open environment kept most of the more docile vatslimes content, often satisfying their need for socialization. This also caused a lot of in-fighting to break out, which often would lead to physically injured and mentally scarred vatslimes.Rarely would on-duty guards step in, they seen no reason to put themselves in danger of genetically engineered murder machines, as they saw it. Many would sit and just watch, only ever stepping in if an audit was due soon. This led to a lot of issues arising and even causing a lot of distrust between vatslimes, harming social interactions and even causing some to be forced into indefinite stasis due to the rise of aggression between vatslimes.
VATCORP is a corporation that works with various governments on bioengineering research and pharmaceuticals. Or, that's what they claim on the outside.The bioengineering research and pharmaceuticals just funded what they were really working on behind the scenes, only partnering with the highest paying countries in the world for bioweapons. Their most promising, yet unstable project was PROJECT: Vatland. Named for the amount of vats that were purchased for various facilities around the globe. These vats were often extremely heavy duty, and could withstand being stored outdoors with some coverings. The only things that could break the vats were the vatslimes themselves, and they often did once they were ready to be brought out into the world.The idea of a bio-engineered superbeast that was hellbent on fighting and following orders was appealing to many governments, and the fact that they weren't considered to be individuals that were people with thoughts, emotions and feelings really fueled a violent and extreme bidding war between governments to create an exclusive contract with VATCORP. What's better than having a super soldier that was made specifically to fight your money wars and you didn't have to pay and can easily replace? A whole army of them!With the escape of several vatslime subjects from the Chapoc Springs Vatcorp (CSV) facility brought around VATCORP's own personal collection of vatslimes (The SDE) meant specifically to detain escapees and to exterminate any that had been born outside of the facilities.
Safe Haven, previously an abandoned mine for various precious metals and gems, is now a home for many vatslimes who had escaped the CSV facility and their descendants and further on. It was secluded enough, and the lack of surveillance that the forest surrounding had made it almost perfect. Some of the SDE has shown face in Safe Haven's meadow, some deciding to escape here themselves after hearing of a more fulfilling, supposedly peaceful life. Others being forced into Safe Haven's hierarchies through other means, usually as a resource in their death.Hierarchies in Safe Haven are often determined individually by branch. Some branches are more like large families, and often commute to and interact with similarly ran branches. Some branches are purely there for a vatslime's desire to own over individuals or to feel more powerful. These branches do often die with their leaders, but sometimes are also taken over by larger, more power-hungry vatslimes.
Branches often times also do end up kicking out vatslimes, not due to any crimes or wrong-doings, but sometimes over-crowding and the lack of resources to expand the branch further into the rock and dirt that makes up the walls of each expanded tunnel. These vatslimes that are kicked from their branches are called dispersals, and are often young but not the strongest of their age within the branch. Some branches hold celebrations and treat dispersing as a coming-of-age thing, some treat dispersing as the worst possible thing on the planet. Dispersing is also an individual choice, and some vatslimes just choose to leave their home branch. Some come back for visits, some stay gone. Dispersing is just something that happens.
In Safe Haven, they also have their own form of commerce, wider governing and a desire to expand their reaches. While many branches are self-governing, they are all mostly kept in check by one of two massive, overgrown vatslimes. These overlords of Safe Haven have split the mines in half vertically to rule over, and often do not interact directly with each other.Chexx is the queen of the darkest parts of Safe Haven, The Depths, and she rules her half with a selective yet harsh iron fist. She is the largest of the two rulers of Safe Haven, and has a strange affinity with taking in the less physically strong vatslimes and is more interested in housing vatslimes that offer beauty and intellect. The Depths is home to many vat slimes of vibrant coloration, many who sport bioluminescence, fins, or even chitin.Loki is the king of the upper levels of Safe Haven, The Dapples, and he is overall a less selective leader, allowing most vatslimes to live in his domain. Not to say he's soft or relaxed, as he very much isn't. He just doesn't care to be selective with aesthetics as long as his underlings behave and work well. They more often have fur and feathers than the Depth-dwellers, even displaying wings to take flight with.Areas between The Depths and The Dapples are often considered neutral ground, The Inbetween, and often have vatslimes that have a mix of traits from both worlds that maintain regular residency here. These neutral areas are often some of the busiest spots for social events, commerce and trading. Dispersals often flood the caverns and caves looking to find somewhere that fits them, some branches in this spot are entirely dedicated to just hosting social get-togethers, much like bars or clubs. A lot of the trading you find here can be various items found from the surface beyond the entrance of the mines located in The Dapples, or gemstones dug up and cut just right from The Depths. The Inbetween is just that. An inbetween world. Even find the Overlords here on rare occasions, though their intent usually is never known and they are never separated from their personal entourages.
Vatslimes (while there is no real or major difference between each other) can have a hierarchy based off of various physical attributes, including mutated coloration, abilities, and so on.Most of the hierarchy in Safe Haven is based off of strengths of individuals, but there is still a bit of a bias among some branches. Not all branches even have a hierarchy, some just have a general family or friendship dynamic!

Slime Color
The most basic colorations of Vatslime slime are bright, vivid colors! The brighter, the better! Vatslimes love bright colors as it's also a sign of good health and hygiene. It can have some variation, a little darker a little lighter, a little more pale, that's fine.

Leucism in vatslimes usually only affects their slime color, and rarely ever affects their coat color or slime density. It doesn't affect their health or social standing. They are considered part of a high beauty standard in Safe Haven, due to the brightness of the slime and the ease they have with morphing due to a slightly softer slime.



Albanism and Melanism in vatslimes are both very different and similar to each other. Both affect the vatslime's ability to morph shape and make them unable to change the color of their fur. Both affect slime density and makes it harder to detect illness due to the lack of pigment.
Neither of them are quite in the middle enough to make a truly gray vatslime.

Melanism
Melanism affects vatslimes by making their slime much more dense. It's almost like jelly, lacking any pigment and being pitch black at most, and a dark gray at least. Due to the density of their slime, they are considered much hardier than other vatslimes, not that this is true in any means. This leads them to being treated more as a resource and less as the individuals they are in more abusive branches and communities.The denser slime means that these vatslimes tend to have a harder time morphing, often only doing it out of necessity than for fashion. It's also somewhat of a noisy process, lots of popping and tearing sounds could be heard, versus the more gentler sound of other vatslimes morphing. The density also prevents them from growing larger and makes them more stocky and even heavier than an average vatslime. There are advantages for them, but there are also disadvantages.
Albanism
Albanism affects vatslimes much differently than melanism, but in different ways. The slime is often at most a blinding white, and at the least a very light gray. It makes their slime much less dense, some could describe it more like a dense foam. They are seen as much more delicate, making them be treated in a very infantilizing way. Some take advantage of this, and prioritize their appearance to make the most of the treatment. Others resent those who treat them in such ways.With the lack of density of albino slime, it makes them weigh less which causes them to grow long and tall, but lanky and seem almost brittle and move almost weightlessly. They can morph their shape, but it never really holds due to the thinness of their slime. If not being kept as status symbol pets within some branches, they are often objectified as performers or as valuable objects. The lack of weight also adds to their ability to be more agile, quick and efficient. There are advantages for them, but there are also disadvantages.

Elderly and Sickly
Vatslimes, like everything else, can get sick and old. Typically the slime will darken and as they near death, it will lose saturation, going almost completely gray. The elderly and sickly vatslimes are all cared for based on the social norms of their branches and communities!

Slymbrids
Slymbrids are the weird combination of a vatslime with literally anything else! Vatslimes tend to have recessive traits, but every now-and-then a slymbrid will inherit the slimey-insides from their vatslime lineage!Slymbrids that are capable of changing form tend to be more accepted in vatslime spaces than not! Slymbrids who aren't able to change form tend to fit in better with domestic society instead of Safe Haven's society!
Norxie is just one of many examples of a slymbrid!

Like everything else living, vatslimes also have their run-ins with illnesses and ailments! Most of them are usually low-grade, non-threatening due to the genetic engineering the species received. Their slime will darken and in severe illness, will cause the slime to desaturate, beginning to turn gray.Vatslimes rarely will catch anything digestive-related, due to their internals being made entirely of an extremely acidic slime, with the exception of sweetvlud's symptoms.

Rockpoke
Rockpoke is the vatslime equivalent of cancer, causing painful growths of hardened internal slime to impale through the outer layers of a vatslime's body and will eventually dry them out.


Gempoke
It's rockpoke, but sparkly! Often occurs to very stressed out vatslimes, and is extremely rare. Vatslimes inflicted with gempoke often are kept alive for as long as possible in a gempoke-infected state, as they are used to harvest endless crystals.
Vludmelt
Vludmelt is often caused by when a vatslime cannot stop absorbing moisture, often becoming overhydrated. They tend to start oozing and dripping their internal slime more and more, being unable to be touched or handled safely due to the acidity of the internal slime.


Sweetvlud
Sweetvlud is the lack of acidity in a vatslime's internals. This can result in them having a harder time digesting food and make them prone to foodborne illness. It also makes it harder for them to regenerate lost slime from any potential injuries, which often causes them to be missing limbs.
Death is handled in a case-by-case based on both the branch and individual that has passed. Some branches have ceremonies, like traditional funerals. Some branches have celebrations and parties. Some just toss the body out to be collected as a resource. At the end of the day, in Safe Haven, death doesn't mean the end of involvement within the underground society.Death, after those who need to mourn do so, usually results in a vatslime being turned into materials by their brethren. Once dried out, the teeth collected as currency, fur fibers used for textiles, and the dried vash (vatslime ash) left behind is used as an additive for foods, as a material to repair walls and structures with. It also is used as a basis for clay that when fired, it creates a shimmery glaze that matches the color of the slime it originated from during their life. This also results in vatslimes making decorative charms, jewelry and various other objects to remember their loved ones by, glazed with their vash. It is common for these items to be relating to the deceased's interests or passions, or relating to a very proud moment of their life.
On rare occasions, vatslimes pass from a disease named vludmelt. It makes the slime unable to be dehydrated completely, always having some level of moisture and it cannot be safely handled. Using tools to move it, vatslimes collect it as best as they can and transport it to be used as a weapon, a torturous punishment and even as just waste management due to the high acidity.Vatslimes usually die from the inevitable drying of their internal slime, which is very thin and watery for an average vatslime. Permanently dried slime cannot be revived, as it literally cannot be rehydrated.
Standard vatslime slime is fairly watery and thing, but the outer layers tend to harden up just enough to imitate non-liquid flesh and allows the vatslimes to change their fur color and physical traits at will and very rapidly. It allows them to morph and hide amongst other creatures for whatever reason they wish. Most use this ability for hunting and self expression.In spite of all of this, they do have a very basic standard shape they still follow when around their own kind and those they trust, it's built into them!

While all vatslimes do have the ability to change their shape, and most their color, at any given time, it requires a lot of energy to maintain a shape they didn't grow into themselves. This section covers the basics of what their anatomy entails and touches on the various traits they can have!
All vatslimes at minimum will have their slime color displayed on their noses, digital pads and any parts that would show more internal workings, such as gills or extra nostrils. This was done to make them a bit more easier to identify them from an average non-vatslime individual.Vatslimes also do not typivslly have metacarpal or carpal pads on any hand-like structures. They are 100% an anthropomorphic species, rarely ever using their arms for locomotion past climbing. It also makes their slime less visible to slime hunters. But also some don't care and will have metacarpal pads anyway.

Vatslimes can have any amalgamation of traits growing from their bodies. By default, vatslimes usually have 2 arms and 2 legs, and sharp teeth. Sometimes they'll have extra limbs, varied fur lengths and nose shapes!During their formative years (born outside of VATCORP facilities), vatslimes will slowly adopt on traits that become more permanent as they reach adulthood. Usually, they will adopt traits that were present in other vatslimes around them or other creatures they have a fascination in or even a connection.Like every society, there are always beauty trends and standards, and vatslimes are no exception. Some vatslimes will take on forms of exaggerated headshapes, differently shaped teeth, permanent holes in their bodies with no apparent purpose, or even fake jewelry made from their own slime to try and fit in with other vatslimes who also have jewelry and accessories.Some vatslimes have even eaten various materials to give themselves differently textured slime, it doesn't hurt them but it is permanent! Mica, metals, even sand and glass have all been seen as more common texture-additives for vatslimes, usually resulting in the slime taking on similar aesthetics as these things.For a vatslime, their looks are all a form of self-expression and can be pretty fluid!
